JEFFREY LEE COSTELL is the Senior Attorney, Chief Executive Officer and founder of the Firm and practices in the areas of bankruptcy (including reorganizations, debtor and creditor rights and workouts); commercial and business litigation; and real estate (including bankruptcies, workouts, litigation and transactions). Prior to the formation of the Firm, Jeff practiced in large, national law firms, first in the bankruptcy department of Finley, Kumble and Wagner and later in the bankruptcy department of the Los Angeles office of Keck, Mahin & Cate, both former large, national law firms that had offices throughout the United States.
In the field of real estate, throughout his career, Jeff has been involved in real estate bankruptcies, workouts, litigation, transactions, acquisitions, development, leasing and finance. In addition to his extensive hands-on legal experience, Jeff also has broad practical business experience, having served as Vice-President of the Southern California and the San Diego divisions of the publicly-traded Kaufman & Broad Home Corp. and having served as General Counsel and Director of Acquisitions for the Arba Group, a middle market retail development company, and later for GH Palmer Associates, one of the largest multi-family developers in Los Angeles County and currently a client of the firm. In these positions, Jeff¡¯s primary focus was land acquisition. As general counsel in the business sector, Jeff was also responsible for litigation and legal oversight, thus giving him broad experience in directing legal work in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
Jeff graduated summa cum laude and phi beta kappa from Syracuse University in 1976, with B.A. degrees in English Literature, Comparative Religion and French Language. He later obtained his J.D., cum laude, from Georgetown University Law Center in 1980, after serving as an Editor of the prestigious Georgetown Law Journal.
Jeff is a licensed member of the California, Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley Bar Associations and is admitted to practice law in all state and various federal courts in California, including the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of the United States. He is also a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Financial Lawyers Conference and a licensed real estate broker in the State of California.
Originally from New York, Mr. Costell has lived in the greater Los Angeles area since 1980 and currently resides in Hidden Hills, California, with his wife, Cynthia, and their two daughters, Juliet, 5 years old, and Chloe, 2 years old.
